1. Please "click here" for the windmill activity. You are going to design three windmills, please choose one in each location (one offshore, one plains, and one hills windmill). Your goal is to produce the most energy for your town (number of homes powered). When you are completed the construction of the three windmills please print out the results (graph).
2. Please do a Google search to fill out the global warming diagram. Make sure you include at least FIVE points for each circle (pro or con) and record the detailed information on the back side.
3. Please "click here" for the Global Warming Game. Please follow the prompts to make the correct decisions for your country. After the eight - nine rounds, they will give you a rating on the following three categories:
- Environment
- Wealth
- Popularity as a Leader
Please print out this report.
~~~~~ Please turn in the Venn Diagram, Windmill Report, and Global Warming Game Report~~~~
4. If you have time, please answer the following questions in your notebook about the landfill decomposition:
a. Describe what happened to the materials in the organic soil. What materials were
biodegradable in the organic soils?
b. Describe what happened to the materials in the sand. Were any materials biodegradable in the
sand?
c. Did any of the material degrade in the sanitary landfill? Why or why not?
d. What materials degraded the most rapidly? Did this go along with your predictions?
e. Given you results, what soil type would you use to cover waste in landfills with? Explain.
Recycled Paper Poster!
It all started when I was researching different activities about recycling and reusing. I found this video (click here of you want to watch it ~ 3 minutes) about making large recycled paper. This sparked an idea for the following project:
1. We first created the large sheets of paper by blending up old class work and posters, creating a pulp. We used the same technique for creating the paper as the video above, however we used window screens and a kiddy pool. However we took measures to speed the drying process along, including "squeezing" the excess water out and allowing them to dry over the weekend.
2. Once they were dry, the students were given the task of picking a topic we previously discussed and creating an advertisement. The topics could have been something that they thought was important, shocking, or just interesting.
3. The goal was to create an "eye catching" and interesting advertisement. Now I need YOUR help to select a winner from each class!
4. Here is the process for voting:
- Click here to view the posters. Please scroll through all of the posters. When you see one that
looks interesting please read more about the topic.
- Once you find your TWO FAVORITE posters, record the number (On the top left of each
page). Please choose two different posters.
- After you have found your two favorite posters, click here to VOTE! It will ask you for your name
and your first and second pick. Again please pick two different posters.
Voting will be open until Sunday 5/4/2014
Ecological Footprint
Online Activity:
1. You will be taking a quiz to determine your ecological footprint. In this activity the calculation will show you how much land and resources it would take to support your lifestyle. Click here for the Quiz. Start my selecting your country. Answer the questions for the different lifestyle categories, try to use the more detailed questions at the bottom. At the end of the quiz please record in your spiral notebook:
2. If you have time, you can "edit your footprint" to see how different responses might change your total score or "explore scenarios" to see how different choices might impact your score. However, please read the document on the ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. It discusses general ways to be "green" and then how that change can reduce your footprint. Click here for the document.
3. Next explore how your scores compare to averages for your country as well as for other countries, click here for the link. Please read the description before continuing. Select 5 countries, including yours, from the map and record the trends for both ecological footprint and Biocapacity. Also, if the country is more of an ecological creator or debtor. Put your recorded information into your spiral notebook, it should look something like:
